My friend Mark sent me the trailer for the new
Robin Hood movie. He knows I have an interest in such things, and not only because of
Robin Hood: The Historically Inaccurate Drinking Game. (I took a class once called "England in the time of Robin Hood". It was interesting, but needed more discussion of Robin Hood.)
( trailer & transcript behind cut )Seriously, folks, I am wearing my jaw-dropped expression right now.
For REALS?It's... it's.... It's
Robin Hood: The Bravehearted Patriot! *siiiigh*
My peeve with this isn't actually the historical inaccuracy, because whatever. I realised long ago that when people think you need to fictionalise the reign of
Elizabeth I to make a good movie, they're just never going to be satisfied with actual history. So, you know, I just try and take it all with a grain of salt, and only protest if they open with "This is totally true!!!"
But I am bothered by one thing.
As y'all know, I'm a big fan of Strong Female Characters. But I'm bothered that Strong Female Characters in movies and t.v. tend to end up as "she kicks ass, takes names, and fights as well as any man!" This is not a Strong Female Character. Oh, it's a physically strong one, but a Strong Female Character has depth. She has lines that aren't about the hero. She isn't a prize to be won. She will have conservations with other women that aren't about the men. You know, simple stuff. Easy stuff. Stuff that rarely makes it into movies.
I have a suspicion that we're going to end up with another Warrior!Marion, and not a Marion who has some role other than "being Robin's prize".
Ah well. I will see this movie, for certain, and maybe be proven wrong.
[But seriously, wtf? "The laws of this land enslave people to its King. Empower every man, and you will gain strength." That is
not what was going on when the nobles all got together and demanded more rights for themselves against King John. Bah.
